China’s Xue & Zhang Net Second Moscow Grand Slam Women’s Gold Medal

For the 10th-time in the 19-year history of the women’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour teams from China and the United States competed against each other for an international Beach Volleyball gold medal with two of the confrontations being on the Poklonnaya Gora (Victory Park) in the Russian capital.

And for the second-time in three years, eighth-seeded Chen Xue and Xi Zhang topped the women’s podium in Moscow by capturing the gold medal at the US$600,000 Grand Slam presented by SEAT by defeating second-seeded Jen Kessy and April Ross of the United States 21-17 and 21-19 in the 41-minute final.  Both of China’s gold medal victories against the Americans have been in Moscow by Chen and Zhang.

In winning their fifth SWATCH FIVB World Tour title, the 21-year old Xue and 25-year old Zhang shared the $43,500 first-place prize as the Chinese topped an international Beach Volleyball podium for the first-time since defeating Americans Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs in the 2008 Moscow finale.

ΕΘΝΙΚΗ ΑΝΔΡΩΝ: Πάλεψε αλλά λύγισε και πάλι στο τάι μπρέικ

Τη δεύτερη ήττα της σε ισάριθμους αγώνες με αντίπαλο την Πορτογαλία γνώρισε η Εθνική ομάδα βόλεϊ των ανδρών, στο «Παβιλάο Μουνισιπάλ» της Πόβοα Ντε Βαρζίμ. Το αντιπροσωπευτικό συγκρότημα ηττήθηκε με 3-2 σετ (25-19, 25-21, 15-25, 19-25, 15-9) από τους Ίβηρες με αποτέλεσμα να απέχει πλέον τρεις βαθμούς από την κορυφή του 2ου ομίλου του Ευρωπαϊκού Λιγκ. Η ομάδα του Μέιφορθ ανέτρεψε το εις βάρος της 2-0 και ισοφάρισε σε 2-2 με αντεπίθεση διαρκείας και κορυφαίους τους Φράγκο και Ρουμελιώτη,όμως για μια ακόμη φορά έχασε το παιχνίδι στο τάι μπρέικ. "Κόλλησε" στην επίθεση μετά το 9-9 του 5ου σετ το αντιπροσωπευτικό συγκρότημα. Κρατάει στα θετικά του μια ακόμη ανατροπή, όμως όχι και το αποτέλεσμα στο τέλος, όπως στον αγώνα του Σαββάτου.

Η Εθνική ομάδα ξεκίνησε με λάθη στην υποδοχή του πρώτο σετ και με τους γηπεδούχους να μπαίνουν στο παιχνίδι πιο δυνατά παίρνοντας προβάδισμα με 7-4. Δύο συνεχόμενοι πόντοι από Φράγκο και Προύσαλη και ένα λάθος στην επίθεση των Πορτογάλων έφεραν το 7-7. Η κακή υποδοχή όμως ήταν άλυτο πρόβλημα, που έδωσε στους γηπεδούχους ακόμη τρεις εύκολους πόντους και με νέο σερί έφτασαν και πάλι τη διαφορά στους τρεις. Ο Μέιφορθ άλλαξε τον Καριπίδη με τον Μηνούδη, το σκηνικό της ελληνικής υποδοχής όμως παρέμεινε το ίδιο με τον Αμερικανό ομοσπονδιακό πρποπονητή να ζητά τάιμ άουτ στο 12-7 και τους 'Ιβηρες να διατηρούν διαφορά σχετικής ασφάλειας (16-11), σημείο στο οποίο ξαναμπήκε στο παιχνίδι ο Καριπίδης. Τίποτα δεν άλλαξε μέχρι το τέλος του σετ. Το πρόβλημα της Εθνικής ομάδας έμεινε άλυτο και οι γηπεδούχοι το κατέκτησαν με 25-19. Το ποσοστό υποδοχής μας στο πρώτο σετ ήταν μόλις 48%.

Και το δεύτερο σετ βρήκε τους Πορτογάλους να είναι μπροστά στο σκορ (8-5) στο πρώτο τεχνικό τάιμ άουτ. Η εικόνα παρέμεινε η ίδια, ενώ η ελληνική ομάδα δεν μπορούσε να προβληματίσει με τα σερβίς της τους Ίβηρες. Αρχικά με επίθεση του Ανδρεάδη σε πρώτο χρόνο και στη συνέχεια με μπλοκ των Ανδρεάδη και Ρουμελιώτη η Εθνική ισοφάρισε σε 9-9. Η ομάδα του Ντίαζ κράτησε το προβάδισμα με 14-10 και 16-13. Χωρίς επιθετικό ρυθμό και νευρική, η ελληνική ομάδα με δύο συνεχόμενα λάθη έμεινε πίσω με διαφορά τεσσάρων πόντων (19-15). Πολύ καλή δουλειά στην άμυνα από τον Πορτογάλο λίμπερο Τεϊσέιρα στο δεύτερο σετ. Οι 'Ελληνες διεθνείς βελτιώθηκαν στο σερβίς και με καλές επιλογές μείωσαν στον έναν (21-20). Τα λάθη στην επίθεση ξανάφεραν τη διαφορά και το δεύτερο σετ κατέληξε και αυτό στα χέρια των Πορτογάλων με 25-21.

Το καλύτερο ξεκίνημά της έκανε η Ελλάδα στο 3ο σετ όταν και με πρωταγωνιστή τον Ανδρέα Φράγκο προηγήθηκε με 5-2 και με άσο του Ρουμελιώτη 9-5. Ο Μέιφορθ έριξε στο παιχνίδι και τον Ασπιώτη από το ξεκίνημα του σετ. Με μπλοκ του Ανδρεάδη το αντιπροσωπευτικό συγκρότημα έφτασε τη διαφορά στους πέντε 12-7 και με λάθος του Σουκέιρα απέκτησε τη μεγαλύτερη διαφορά της στο παιχνίδι (7 πόντων) 15-8. Οι παίκτες του Μέιφορθ είχαν ρυθμό στην επίθεση και έφτασαν πρώτοι στο τεχνικό τάιμ άουτ (16-10). Στην επίθεση με Φράγκο, Ασπιώτη, Κανέλλο και άσο του Ρουμελιώτη η διαφορά πήγε στους εννέα (21-12). Ο... περίπατος της Ελλάδας στο 3ο σετ ολοκληρώθηκε με καλή άμυνα και ποντους από τον Καριπίδη που επέστρεψε προς το τέλος του σετ. Η διαφορά έφτασε στους 10 και η ελληνική ομάδα κατέκτησε το 3ο σετ με 25-15 μειώνοντας σε 2-1.

Ανάλογο με το προηγούμενο ήταν και το ξεκίνημα του 4ου σετ για την ελληνική ομάδα αφού πήρε προβάδισμα από την αρχη με 6-2 και 8-5. Η διαφορά έστασε στους τέσσερις με ωραία προσπάθεια του Ανδρέα Ανδρεάδη στο φιλέ (11-7). Στο 14-11 ο Νίκος Ρουμελιώτης πήρε μπλοκ-άουτ όμως ο πρώτος διαιτητής έδωσε χέρι... βοήθειας στους Πορτογάλους με αποτέλεσμα να μειώσουν τη διαφορά στους δύο. Εκεί έμεινε η διαφορά μέχρι και το δεύτερο τεχνικό τάιμ άουτ (18-16) υπέρ της ελληνικής ομάδας, ενώ αυξήθηκε ξανά στους τέσσερις 18-14 μέχρι να σταματήσει το μικρό ελληνικό σερί ο Λόπες. Ο Ρουμελιώτης πήρε πάνω του επιθέσεις για το 21-16 με την ομάδα του Μέιφορθ να έχει καλό ρυθμό στο σερβίς και να δυσκολεύει την υποδοχή των Πορτογάλων. Η διαφορά πήγε στους έξι (24-18) πάλι με επίθεση του αρχηγού και απέναντί του τριπλό μπλοκ. Ο Φράγκος σημάδεψε σωστά από τα τρία μέτρα για το 25-19 με το οποίο η ελληνική ομάδα ισοφάρισε σε 2-2 τα σετ. Όπως και το Σάββατο, όλα κρίθηκαν στο 5ο σετ.

Οι Πορτογάλοι μπήκαν πιο δυνατά στο 5ο σετ και προηγήθηκαν με 4-2. Συνεχόμενα χαμένα σερβίς για τις δύο ομάδες και μπροστά βρέθηκαν οι γηπεδούχοι με 6-5. Ο Ρουμελιώτης συνέχισε να περνάει τη μπαλα και μείωσε σε 8-7 και με πολύ δύσκολη προσπάθεια σε 9-8. Ισοφάριση με μονό μπλοκ του Ασπιώτη (9-9)! Ξανά στους δύο οι Πορτογάλοι που μπλόκαραν τον αρχηγό της Εθνικής και έφτασαν στο 15-9 κατακτώντας τη νίκη στις λεπτομέρειες, όπως έκαναν και το Σάββατο.

Τρομερή προσπάθεια των διεθνών μας και ανατροπή δεδομένων από το 2-0 σε 2-2, όμως λεπτομέρειες στο τάι μπρέικ και λίγο η τύχη που είχαν οι Πορτογάλοι έκριναν το παιχνίδι.

BEACH VOLLEY - ΜΠΙΤΣ ΒΟΛΕΪ: Κινέζες «τσαρίνες»

Οι Κινέζες  Ξούε και Ζανγκ Ξι κατέκτησαν την πρώτη θέση στο Γκραν Σλαμ του SWATCH FIVB World Tour που διεξήχθη στη Μόσχα. Το δίδυμο, που αποτέλεσε το νούμερο 8 του ταμπλό, επιβλήθηκε στον τελικό των Αμερικανίδων Κέσι και Ρος (Νο 2) με 2-0 σετ (21-17, 21-19) σε 41 λεπτά. Το χάλκινο μετάλλιο πήραν οι Βραζιλιάνες Λαρίσα και Τζουλιάνα (Νο 1), νικώντας τις συμπατριώτισσές τους Αντονέλι και Ταλίτα (Νο 3) με 2-0 σετ (21-18, 21-18).

USA and China to meet in Montreux Volley Masters final

USA will meet China in the final of the Montreux Volley Masters after the two sides beat Cuba and Russia respectively on the penultimate day of the women’s competition in Switzerland on Saturday.

USA took advantage of a number of Cuba mistakes on the way to a 3-0 win in the day’s first semifinal. Following some solid defense in the first set, USA went to work on disrupting the Cuban offense. Cuba eventually lost patience to let the second and third set slip from its grasp and with that, a place in the finals.

China marked its return to the tournament by beating Russia 3-1 in the semifinal to book a meeting with USA. The Russians, led by powerful duo Goncharova and Kosheleva easily won the first set before China clinched the second. The third set also went China’s way however the fourth almost fell to Russia following some sublime attacking. However the wall of Chinese blockers was too much and they fell at the final hurdle.

The two sides will now meet on Sunday to decide the winner of the 2010 Monteux Volley Masters.

Another home victory for Turkey in Gaziantep

Turkey celebrated another victory this afternoon in Gaziantep as the local guys defeated once again Austria for the second leg of the 2010 CEV European League. This time the hosts needed four sets to cruise past their opponents but finally were happy with their overall performance.
After the previous match staged on Saturday, their Croatian-born coach Veljko Basic had stated: “We had to work too much to find consistency in blocking and serving and hence were affected by some errors. We did not play really good but this is a very young team, so it takes time to have things run properly. Still I want to have my young players on the court since the European League represents a very important chance to get international experience. And at the end of the match we were able to realize that this tactic paid off”.
This afternoon the teams set up a very exciting battle, with the score staying extremely close in the opening set. After the first technical break, Turkey changed gear and especially young setter Berkan Bozan performed really well. The hosts stretched their margin at the second mandatory stop (16:12) and profiting of some mistakes of their opponents closed the set pretty quickly at 25-18. Austria fought back bravely in the second set and Thomas Zass scored many points in attack. That was the key to level the match with the set ending at 25-23 for the guests. Turkey led all the way through in the third set, with Burutay Subasi and Ahmet Pezuk contributing pretty much to the final 25-18. Austria clawed back in the opening section of the first set, leading first 4:0 and then 8:5 at the first technical time-out. Even though the guests set the tempo also for the second compulsory break (16:12), still Turkey stormed back – especially with Serhat Coskun – and captain Sinan Cem Tanik to finally tie at 23 and finish the match some minutes later. Austrian Thomas Zass topped the charts of the best scorers this afternoon with 25 points while Serhat Coskun was the most effective among the Turks with a total of 17.

Power Cup comes to an end with many happy faces

The World's biggest youth Volleyball tournament, the Power Cup, finished on Sunday in Seinäjoki accompanied by chilly weather conditions. The last competition day was actually pretty cold with temperatures up to 11 degrees. But even the chilly weather didn't slow the pace of the best young players along their way to the final success. Many happy faces were to be seen on the podium during the awarding ceremony.
Most of the classes got Finnish winners. In the boys’ division, there were no winners from foreign countries, but Tallinna Kalev of Estonia won bronze in the A-boys/born 1990 or later and Rakvere Sportschool – also from neighboring Estonia - took the silver medal in the D-boys/born 1998 or later. In the girls’ competition, two gold medals went to Estonia: Tallinna Kalev won the U22-girls/born 1988 or later and Kunda Volleyball Team topped the standings in the A-girls/1990 born or later. There was still one foreign class winner, when Tallinna Kalev won the D-mixed/born 1998 or later, a competition starring boys and girls playing together.
During the Power Cup the Finnish Anti-doping Agency promoted some actions for clean sport and fair play with the special program called "Clean Win". Mauro Berruto, the head coach of the Finnish men's national team, and Tapio Korjus, former javelin thrower and Olympic champion in Seoul 1988, set a good example by signing the petition asking for a clean sport.
“Clean sport is important. Everybody, who does any sport, has to enjoy doing it and use sport as a key for a good and healthy life” said Tapio Korjus. ”Our top athletes and sport idols are showing an example for the youngsters, who are our future in all top sports” continues the Olympic champion.
Italia-born Mauro Berruto did also support the same campaign: “Clean sport should be the one and only way to practice any sport. Fortunately we have in Volleyball an advantage, i.e. that Volleyball skills are more important than power” mentioned the mentor of the Finnish national team.
Both sport professionals called also for versatility. “Children should improve their physical skills by doing every possible sport. This is the way how young athletes can grow and develop into top athletes cleanly” they said.
This versatility is to be found also in the Power Cup: the girls of a soccer team from the club FC POHU (Pohjois-Haagan Urheilijat) entered the division C-girls/born 1995 or later. The team is sponsored by FADA and played with the name of PUPU. “The team is a good example of versatility in sports. The girls won one match and they are more than happy with that. They are natural winners, when they take a chance to challenge themselves in other sport than the one they have done for years, that simply fires them up” commented Susanna Sokka, Information Manager at FINADA.
Jaana Laurila, Project Manager for the Power Cup on behalf of the Finnish Volleyball Association, announced at the end of the competition that the 2011 Power Cup will be organized in Lahti and run there through June 9-14. Teams from Finland and all over Europe are already invited to join that unique experience!
